Department of Economics and Finance

The Department Economics and Finance was founded in 1977.

Its Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics and Finance programme was accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications in 2004, and was restructured into a four-year programme in 2009 under the name BA (Honours) in Economics and Finance. The programme aims to cultivate students with a solid understanding of economic theories and an ability to apply this knowledge in various decision-making situations. Aside from fully grasping the nuances of social sciences, graduates will become familiar with the major fields in economics and finance as well as its analytical tools.

Professional Recognition

  • Dual Academic and Professional Qualifications with the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB)
    The HKIB may award the “Advanced Diploma for Certified Banker” and “Professional Diploma for Certified Banker” to graduates of our BA (Hons) in Economics and Finance Programme upon the successful completion of two designated electives from our Department
  • CFA University Affiliation Programme
    Our BA (Hons) in Economics and Finance degree Programme has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Affiliation Programme. This status is granted to academic institutions whose degree programmes embed at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) providing students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positioning them to sit for the CFA examinations. The students are also eligible for a CFA level I examination scholarship
  • Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
    The E&F programme is recognised by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Graduates from our department with one-year relevant working experience are eligible to apply for and become an Associate Member (AssocRICS). Alternatively, they may pursue further study for an accredited degree, receive 1-2 years structured training, sit for RICS assessment and subsequently become a chartered surveyor

Programme Features

  • The financial services sector is robustly making use of FinTech to increase the competitiveness of the Hong Kong financial services industry
  • Launched a unique and interdisciplinary FinTech programme in Hong Kong, to develop students’ capacity for critical and independent thinking and prepare for future technological and digital transformation in the finance industry
  • The Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Financial Technology covers major areas of (1) finance, (2) technology, (3) applied data science, and (4) economics, law and business.
  • It equips students with the knowledge of big data analytics, computer languages (Python, C#, R, Java, etc.), blockchain, machine learning and AI in FinTech applications.

Career Paths

Graduates of the programme may pursue their careers in FinTech per se or in forms that employ FinTech solutions. Some may opt to work for information technology and big data companies, in regulatory compliance roles, or to launch their own start-up companies. The programme will also provide a solid foundation for further postgraduate study in the field.
