The Department of English Language and Literature at Shue Yan hosts the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English, a programme which is unique in its curriculum design. The programme includes courses in four areas – literature, linguistics, translation and cultural studies. In its integration of these four streams the programme offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary explorations of the English language and its culture.
The programme encourages students to be creative in their exploration of knowledge spanning the visual arts, cinema, philosophy, ecology, the humanities, print culture and media culture. Students will explore and analyse a rich variety of cultural texts from Japanese manga and anime to video games, TV drama and films to contemporary and classic works of English Literature as well as Literature in English and creative non-fiction.
Students receive intensive training to achieve language proficiency, technological competency, as well as a thorough understanding of communication processes.
The department aims to equip its students with thorough understanding of Chinese history whilst also providing a global perspective. The programme encompasses specialised issues such as Chinese historiography, cultural history, economic history and intellectual history. Topics such as world history, history of the world and China, as well as regional history (including Hong Kong) are also taught in the programme. Since the 1990s, the department has also run a master’s programme on ancient/modern and contemporary history with Peking University.
For five decades, it has shared the University’s mission to promote traditional Chinese culture and moral values. Our undergraduate students will have opportunities to practise various types of writing, and they will have a high level of writing skills after graduation. They will also learn a wide scope of knowledge in Chinese Literature, Chinese Language and Chinese Literary Criticism.
